Man Overboard!

In days gone by
when sanity thrived
the only things we worried about were
acne and homework,

. . . and a thing called spanking from time to time.

Mom was at the door
when we came home from school,
not shoveling bags through
a Burger King window.

. . . a value meal was at home on the stove.

We scrambled outside
with Kool-Aid on our lips and hustled
to play hide and seek, jump rope, shoot marbles,
or chose up sides to play cowboys and Indians.

. . . without concern of being politically correct.

Computers were in science fiction movies.

Two bits was a lot of money that
bought a pop, a comic book and candy bar
with change left over. A penny was a big deal,
and a dollar opened a Christmas Club account.

War was something we learned
from history books and old movies.
We never watched bodies burn in the street
or attended funerals for classmates.

Our progress gives pause to wonder . . .
Advancement is one thing, insanity, quite another.
