New Beginnings

by sandramitchell

I wander through the wilderness of night,
where winds have blown the open meadows bleak;
and limbs of trees are bent and cowed with fright,
while hiding from the force that blizzards wreak.

The sun, now spent, has long thrown off its rays,
and clouds, once warm, now cooled by frosts that bite.
Too soon I’ll feel the chill of winter days,
then watch as snow turns chequered fields to white.

I wander on through fields of broken corn,
once planted for the food we hoped they’d yield.
But nature wasn’t kind and farmers mourn;
no hallowed harvest gleaned from ruined field.

I long have been acquainted by the might
of Mother Nature’s moods throughout the year.
The way she can destroy, then put things right,
and warm the land to bring about some cheer.

I wander through the wilderness of night,
The sun, now spent, has long thrown off its rays.
Yet, if I look I’ll see in morning’s light,
the start of new beginnings on the way.
