The Scent

by Cory G

It was the smell that did it. That fetid rotting animal odor drew her toward her father's study, the room she had avoided since his death a month prior. Anna spent so much time in there when she was a little girl, playing with her dolls or pretending to read, just like her father, by carefully flipping the pages and fingering the words in one of his novels.

The scent from the study grew stronger every day, but only Anna could smell it. Her mother couldn't. She told her to stop making up stories. "He's dead, Anna! He's gone!" The scent pulled at her with an invisible force and Anna knew if she went in the study she'd never come out again. And she knew her father was still in there--dangling from the beam--even if no else did. As she got closer, the muscles in her fingers involuntarily loosened her thick leather belt. Anna paused, then turned the glass rosette knob slowly and entered the room. Her heart quickened but only for a second. Then she was filled with a calming warmth. She slid the belt from her jeans, gripped it firmly, and looked up.
