We Should Have Gone

by Jim Peterson

"Jimmy, your friend Greg passed away," Father said, his voice breaking.
Why don't grownups like to say "died"?
I hoped Greg wasn't in pain. How could he not have been--he died? Mother said that just that morning Greg said he wanted to go home, and to see his dog, Rusty.
A couple days ago my parents talked about us going to visit Greg. I said okay. Greg was a friend, but he wasn't a real good friend.
So, I said okay about going to visit Greg in the hospital, but we didn't. I wish we would have gone.
