Prisoner of War

by Ada Jewell

I made our way through the forest. It was dark, finding my way was not easy. I froze, hearing something straight ahead. I spoke. "Hallo, wer ist das?" A simple German greeting, the response was silence, my heart sunk as they whispered in the night, their whispers gave them away. I heard them speaking English and realized I was surrounded by Yanks. There I was, a young German farm boy standing with my machine gun surrounded by American soldiers. I did not dare pull the trigger. I lowered my weapon and raised my hands; I was a prisoner of war.
