Over and over the battle rages

Lull In The Storm

by Gail Denham

Quiet now! No gun shots from
behind dry desert shrubs
and hillocks, as if the dust-crusted
uniforms thought they were hidden.
Bent low, our people rode in circles,
whining arrows flew.

No buffalo left either. When did
my father and I last find a great
herd to supply our village?
So many moons and battles ago.

Today I dress one last time to greet
dawn's first light. Everything is still
-- so quiet I hear a quail family
scurry across the clearing.
An eagle sails to a tall snag.

No one left around me. Quiet now
-- for how long? Dust clouds
to the east tell me
it will begin again, soon.

The battles on the plains were so many. The outcome terrible on both sides. Thanks for the image by ande500.
