A Free Verse Fable
Masters build monuments honoring self,
yet captives are bereft of homage.
Perhaps no guile resides in the powerful, notwithstanding,
gulfs divide the consciousness of both.
When leadership denies benevolence,
grinding and gnashing of teeth perseveres.
Obligation resides with the mighty,
to acknowledge wind pushes sails unevenly.
Born to plenty or birthed to little,
forges lines that separate men.
Handling treasure like a rider's whip,
cannot quell inequitable divisions.
A paucity of riches doesn't equal scarcity of virtue.
Wisdom, not fortune, springs from the soul.
Wealth alone produces no character.
Poverty is not the source of dignity.
Wherefrom comes the value of a man?
Is it the gold he has discovered,
or the marrow that made him a prospector?
Neither...character is squarely product of the heart.
