Can we put the pieces together again?

Past Repair?

by Maria Jose Garcia

The first time it happened, I blamed the wind. The window was open after all...

It broke into two pieces and was easy to fix. But even after I finished applying the invisible glue, I could see the silvery crack along the middle.

Three months later, it broke again. I blamed the dog. I shouted at him for stomping on it.

'Bad, bad boy.'

He left the room, his big black eyes looking at me imploringly.

That time it was more difficult to fix. It had broken into four pieces and there was a tiny sliver I couldn't find.

I used sticky tape and was relatively happy with the result.

But today we are home alone. There's nothing or nobody I can hold accountable. Yet here it is lying on the floor at my feet, smashed into smithereens and past repair. My heart... I trusted you and you've broken it one too many times.
