A veteran that lived and died as a hero

An Honorable Man and A Friend

by Robert Zimmerman

REMEMBERING VETERANS (free verse) Contest Winner
the last time we met, we hugged
combat had taken a toll on him
he was a real man
I called him Charlie
an Army Ranger in Vietnam
he was a hero
three purple Hearts accompanied by two bronze stars
emblazoned his dress uniform
survival of enemy fire earned him purple hearts
courage assured the bronze stars
the love of America motivated him
the love of life inspired him
his love of God assured him
with wife and family life was a joy
one day he fell ill
with sadness the diagnosis was hard
optimism still ruled his heart and mind
the doctors were called as the tumors grew
agent orange was fifty years past
it was the invisible enemy that ambushed him
the battle raged for five years
his brain filled with tumors
one afternoon Charlie had a last meeting at the VA
the doctors there wanted to treat aggressively
he surrendered and went home with his family
Vietnam finally killed Charlie fifty years later
Charlie is at peace
the world is still at war
