The Awdl Sonnet

When Looking Back

by Dolly'sPoems

As time moves ever forward, I look back,
and wonder what is lacking in my day,
I track so many memories and pack
each one inside my mind as I replay.

As minutes move too fast, it’s time for bed,
and as I lay my head, the years have passed,
it’s said that restless spirits of the dead
will haunt the living, if they feel outcast.

Will I become a ghost when I am gone?
To tantalise for fun and scare the living,
no sun will shine for me, as life moves on,
and death’s a fact, and it is unforgiving.

So looking back is comforting and real,
remembering my youth has great appeal.

A Sonnet
Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter. Each line of the sonnet consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The rhymes scheme is a,b,a,b; c,d,c,d; e,f,e,f, gg.

The Awdl Sonnet
The same format as above but with an additional Awdl included. See below.
Awdl, in Welsh verse, is a long ode written in a complex system of alliteration and internal rhyme, the awdl was, by the 15th century, the vehicle for many outstanding Welsh poems. Assonance is acceptable for the internal rhyming, as long as the sound is maintained.

The extra rhyming complex as follows:

x x x x x x x x x a
x x x x x a x x x b
x a x x x x x x x a
x x x x x x x x x b

x x x x x x x x x c
