Ink blot test

by Sergeant Floyd

What do I see? What do I see?
Dear Hermann Rorschach
do I pass or fail your test?
I spy figures in spiraling circles
sinking into Dante's hell.

But the order has shifted.
Socrates, in limbo, has fallen in levels
and is talking to Hippocrates
just above treacheries ninth circle.
On another level, I see Phlegyas
transporting Dante and Virgil in his boat.
In the ink blot I see plainly
the buffeting winds of lust
preventing rest and peace in the second circle.

Perhaps it is better to say what I can not see
amongst anger and violence, gluttony and greed
in all the remaining circles of hell.
I can not see angels abroad the boulevard Champs-Elysees.
I can not see the intimate Paris cafe
we drank our lattes in.
Is that splatter in the corner my rising hope?
Is that smudge in the middle
the answer to my prayer?

Dear Hermann Rorschach,
did I pass or fail?
One thing is categorically true and clear.
I would have seen things a little differently
if she had not been here.
