A pastoral

Plaid versus blue jeans

by Sergeant Floyd

Plaid versus blue jeans
is why I fell in love with you.
A woolen wool sweater
with snags and hanger bumps
compared to a tailored suit
made from worsted wool.

You are something I can fall into easily.
like my slippers, pipe and robe
or an old classic movie on the tube.
Always a love story.
Always making you cry.

A habit not broken easily
once picked up like riding a bike.
The prairie grouse drums and spins
in circles doing his mating dance.
We have our own rituals lovemaking
making me equally dizzy.
A work of art hoping for a puff.

Pastorals are painted masterpieces.
Green rolling hills, grazing sheep,
bumpy clouds like head butting lambs.
Rivers with dark and deep water
twisting like a rope snaked down
or a ribbon flying off its bobbin.

You are a pastoral for my eyes
like snow white swans spooning neck and neck
or steeplechasing mares with flying tails.
You are a pastoral for my ears.
The singing blackbird a flute.
The warbling meadowlark
a soundboard for heaven's steel guitars.

A day in my life in the country;
Breathing fresh air, loitering like the trees.
Waiting for April or May's flowers.
You are the summoner of summer's sizzle
but also delicate and transparent
as the wings of the mayfly.
Like them living too close to the water,
you live close to my heart.
In plaid versus blue jeans,
it's no contest in my soul.
