The Awdl Sonnet

Show Mercy

by Dolly'sPoems

When he with power chooses to show mercy,
and with his hand can free a troubled soul;
to forge a path with fairness makes us worthy,
with grace and tolerance, they play their role.

Take pity on all those who are in need,
and with your goodly deed consider this:
to feed another with a kindly seed
will serve to save you from the great abyss.

As hell will follow those without a heart,
their card is clearly marked by soullessness,
and start a journey destined to be hard,
and purgatory will damn with hopelessness.

So never kick a man when he is down,
but lend a hand to help him find his crown.

A Sonnet
Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter. Each line of the sonnet consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The rhymes scheme is a,b,a,b; c,d,c,d; e,f,e,f, gg.

The Awdl Sonnet
The same format as above but with an additional Awdl included. See below.
Awdl, in Welsh verse, is a long ode written in a complex system of alliteration and internal rhyme, the awdl was, by the 15th century, the vehicle for many outstanding Welsh poems. Assonance is acceptable for the internal rhyming, as long as the sound is maintained.

The extra rhyming complex as follows:

x x x x x x x x x a
x x x x x a x x x b
x a x x x x x x x a
x x x x x x x x x b

x x x x x x x x x c
x x x x x c x x x d
x c x x x x x x x c

x x x x x x x x x g
