Is it just me or are reviewers grading more harsh the past few days? They are mostly coming from new people, but it is frustrating when I just got a three and a four for work with nothing wrong with it.

RE: Reviews

It seems the newer ones don't take time to get acquainted with the known rules of reviewing as I too have gotten very harsh reviews from new members. I ask them to please take time to understand. I have had to block two that continued to give me a two and yet saying my pieces are excellent and won't tell me anything that is wrong.

I understand why they do it I guess. After all, 4 stars says good, but really, it means bad. Without reading the faq?s, they have no way of knowing. There should be a message when they go to post their first review that explains the rules.

I am very happy that people are giving 'two', 'three', and 'four' star ratings. I am disappointed when writers here don't thank them for their time when they get these ratings, because as a professional writer now, I realize that it is those ratings that will help you grow and learn. And it is also part of the rules that you 'thank' people, and it doesn't say to only thank them when you get a five or six star rating. Besides the fact that you appear ignorant and rude when you don't say thankyou in life in general.

Take the lower ratings on board and change. It is exciting to do so, and when you see a reviewer that only gives fives accompanied by flattery, know that this is a FS habit from, what I call the, 'friendly fiver club', and while we all like to be flattered, a lot of work here is not deserving of a five and six star rating, and over time, flattery is dull and meaningless. Even recognized reviewers that give a five along with corrections, are not doing you a favor and not reviewing according to site rules. No one is a five star writer all the time. I have my good and bad days, and in all honesty, I see so much work that would not make it outside of FS, and the site has more credibility as a whole if people give a 'good' and a 'needs improvement'. This is realistic of the publishing world and I am happy for the changing trend.

RE: Reviews
I completely agree. It is rather annoying getting five stars on everything whether it is great quality or a 575 that was written in three seconds.

I think the rating system should be 3 stars for average work, but according to the FAQS that means below average. Therefore, people should give out stars according to the rules of the rating system.

I personally do not give out 1 or 2 ever, and threes go to ones with major grammar issues. I will give fours for poems with incorrect syllables for a contest, so the writer knows they need to change it for votes. Generally, everything else gets a five unless it is amazing or very creative, and I give it a six.

You are right though. I need to not take it personally and just thank them and move on.

RE: Reviews

Lower ratings are fine for the most part, providing there is something of substance to go with it.

The worst is when someone says, I didn't like it. This isn't constructive.

There will be some who genuinely get taken in and believe all their work is top-notch. it isn't. I write some god-awful stuff sometimes 9not often... lol)

The real issue is that the rating system isn't used by everyone in the same way. At one point, folk were using their own types of systems. The ranking are a bit of a game and don't really mean anything, especially outside of this site. A lot of people would freak out if they see what editors send back to authors sometimes.

In regard to ratings though, most stars given are fine if it's backed up with something constructive. it doesn't just have to be about syllable counts, spelling or grammar either. there's plotting, pacing, character development, descriptiveness, info dumping, passivity and so on. I think many people forget this too and give five stars because it's 'readable'.

The other thing to watch for is those folk who don't like having a star deducted. it's not a deduction. No piece starts out excellent - although sometimes a blank piece of paper may, indeed, be favourable... lol

RE: Reviews
When I first joined, I read the page about reviewing and began giving four stars if there were a number of edits needed ie more than 3 or 4.

I was taken to task very smartly by several so, unless I know the author is okay with an occasional 4 stars (with reasons given), I give 5. But it defeats the whole purpose if writers can't cope with four stars from time to time.

RE: Reviews

I agree with most here. Five stars is the unwritten standard even for mediocre work. A lower rating with constructive advice is helpful for growth. A high rating accompanied by a summary or trite praise is useless. So it makes one a ?recognized" writer?recognized by whom? A few people on one private site.

I?ve had high praise for works here that get rejected by publishers, and I have had works published that finished last in contests here. It?s mostly contrived here; people read and rate others? work just to earn funny money.

I used to promote my work to get mire reviews, but why bother? Most reviews do not help me to improve the work or to win contests.

Comments are there to take or leave. I accept and appreciate some suggestions and ignore others. That?s my privilege as a writer.

RE: Reviews
Heather, 4 stars doesn't mean bad. It means the post is generally good, but there may be a couple of little things the reviewer believes needs improvement. Could be a spelling error, grammar problem, or something similar, but the reviewer's intent (if reviewed correctly) is to point out an opportunity for improvement. Otherwise, the reviewer would have given a higher rating.

I totally appreciate when someone is kind enough to step up and help me! Sometime we all have a typo or mess up a syllable count. If not for these blessed people, my eye may never catch it on my own! A four star is not a criticism, it is a challenge to overcome and do better!

RE: Reviews
Yes, I agree that three or four stars is perfectly acceptable when there is a reason or they can back it up. I mainly was referring to people who give three stars but say great job, because they don?t understand the rating system.
