Contest Closing Dates

If I enter a work in a contest which has a closing date some months hence, is it automatically entered in the soonest contest of the same type?

Several times I have entered a contest that closes a couple months in the future; then when I check later under "my contests" and click on the contest name, I see that the contest I entered is closed--even though the one I entered has NOT yet closed. The closing date of the "earlier" one is not stated in the green box, so I have no way to verify when I was entered.

If my entry did not win the contest, fine. But if it is being entered in an earlier contest, how will I know? We receive no notification that our entry did not win; we just see the winners' names on the home page. I think I am entered later, so I don't pay attention to the earlier winners' list. Then I am left wondering where my entry has disappeared to because I thought it was entered in a later contest.

Am I doing something wrong with my entries? I emailed Tom and he just says I was entered in an earlier contest.

RE: Contest Closing Dates

I'm still having trouble. Is there any way to see the closing date of the paid contest that I did enter but did not win?
I am not questioning the results of any contest. If I did not win, fine. I just feel that my entry seems to have disappeared and was not entered at all. Since nonwinners are not notified, they have no way of knowing whether their entry was received at all. I am CERTAIN that I recorded my contest judging dates correctly, and yet some of them come up as "The contest is closed" even though the date I recorded has not been reached.
So again, is there any way to find out the date that I apparently DID enter?

Jane the best way to find out what has happened is for your to list the TITLE of your entry, the contest type, and the date you posted your entry.

Given you haven't done that I will offer two situations regarding your entries.

1) You entered Closure into the non-fiction writing contest on August 5th. The closing date for that contest was August 6th. You came in third place and if you check the third-place ribbon on your profile you will see when the next deadline for another rerun of the same type of contest comes up again. The results are in the news on the front page and the results were posted August 11th.

2) On August 22nd, you entered Encounter into the cinquain contest. Submissions for entry into that contest closed a couple of days ago. Because that contest is closed if you click on the link on your entry you will see another rerun of a cinquain contest that has a deadline of March 16, 2020. That is a totally new contest that needs a totally new post to enter. And because entries for the current contest are still under review, you can check the status by hovering your mouse over the SOCIAL pull down tab on the top clicking on VOTE and you will be directed to the voting booth where you will see the notification in Cinquain Poetry entries are before the committee and will be decided in 2 to 4 days.

Hope this helps.

RE: Contest Closing Dates

Gloria, it does not help. I am talking about a contest that has not yet closed. I entered it weeks ago when it was first posted. Now when I go to ?my contests," it says I entered that poem in cuz contest (no date given). When I click on the contest name, it says the contest is closed and does not show my entry at the bottom. This is what I don?t understand.

This has happened five times:

On February 21, I entered "The Shopper in a Rhyming Poetry Contest that was to close on Aug. 15. When I later saw that "the contest is closed," I entered "Pop-Up" in that Aug. 15 contest and did not win. Nothing in my second entry process told me that I was already entered.

On March 10, I entered "Appetite" in a 3-Line Poem Contest that was to close on Sept. 3.

On March 22, I entered "A New Road" in A Loop Poetry contest that was to close on Sept. 28.

On April 5, I entered "Lost" in a 100-Word Flash Fiction Contest that was to close on Sept. 16.

On April 7, I entered "Troubles" in a 1-5-7 Poem Contest that was to close on Sept. 20.

In every case, when I look at "My Contests," I click on the name of the contest and get a box saying that the contest is closed. Then it states a date for a "new" contest--the same closing date that I originally entered.

A couple of times, thinking that I had somehow failed to follow all the steps for entry, I tried to enter the same poem/story in the "new" contest . . . and was told that I already have a poem/story by that name. All the works in question WERE posted and received reviews. Why don't they show up on the contest pages?

Am I doing something wrong? My other entries show up just fine. Is there a glitch or inconsistency in the website? I just want to know that my poem/story was indeed entered and did not get omitted somehow.

Thanks for looking into this, Gloria.

Hey Jane, hope your day is going wonderfully well. Your question as follows was already answered by Steve.

They are two different contests of the same type.

If you go and click on your Closure entry that took third place and has a ribbon on your profile you will see this:

Deadline: Friday, February 21, 2020. Reserve your spot, submit your entry, etc.

Clearly that date has not yet arrived and yet that is the deadline listed on the link on the Non-fiction Writing contest of your third place winning Closure entry with a chance to enter into the next contest that has a deadline of 2020. The contest you entered closed on August 6th and the winners were announced August 11th on the front page news.

They are two different contests of the same type. That is all that is. It's a convenience provided to members by the site to enter into another rerun of the same type of contest with a totally different entry.

RE: Contest Closing Dates

I see all the information about "Closure." I had no issues with that contest entry.
All of the entries I mentioned in my previous message (except for "The Shopper") were for contests that have not yet closed, yet they say that the contest I entered has closed.
I record every entry's title and closing date very carefully. I do not understand why some of them are still listed as entered but those four are listed as already closed. (For example, "Determined" was entered on May 4 in a Dribble Flash Fiction Contest the closes on October 6, and it still is listed as entered. Everything there is hunky-dory. I have seen other flash fiction contests in the meantime, but I am entered in the Oct. 6 contest.)
Are you able to go back in and tell me the "real" closing date of the contests that I thought closed later? As of now, it looks as if those entries vanished before even being judged.

RE: Contest Closing Dates
Happy Labour Day to you, Jane. Now go and look at the status of your Cinquain poem you entered Encounter into on August 22nd. That contest closed about a week ago and the winners have been announced on the front page today.

If you go into your entry and click on the link it reads:

Deadline: Monday, March 16, 2020 -- Reserve your spot, submit your entry.

But your Cinquain Encounter was registered and did not place and now that contest is over. You can now enter another rerun of the same type of contest with a new poem for the March 2020 deadline.

RE: Contest Closing Dates

Gloria, I don't think you understand what is going on. "Encounter" was entered and stayed entered and did no win; fine. However, the four other poems/stories were entered but are no longer entered, even though the contest closing dates have not happened. "A New Road" was entered on march 22 in a Loop Poetry Contest that closes on September 28 . . . but that contest page does not list my entry. I wrote down the closing date in two places (on the document where I keep all my works, and on a Post-It note that is attached to a "contest page" by my computer. Why is the poem no longer entered? If I really did enter it in an earlier contest (which I don't believe I did, and I have seen no other Loop Poem contests since that time), can you tell me when that earlier contest did end? All I see is "The contest is closed." It does not say when it closed. I can't go back and look up the winners because I don't know how far back to check.
Please look at the works I mentioned in the earlier email and tell me when those contests closed. Ignore my other entries; all those are still "live" to my knowledge.

RE: Contest Closing Dates
Dear Jane we are going to have stop meeting like this. People are going to talk and being creative writers they have overactive imaginations.

I looked back into the winners and it was Byzantine Mind loop poem that I posted on October 1, 2018 that won the contest. The winners were announced on March 29th, 2019 from a closing date of March 24th, 2019. You posted A New Road on March 22nd, for the March 24th deadline. And since that contest is closed, now when you click on the link in A New Road it reads:

Deadline, Saturday September 18th, 2019. Reserve your Spot, Submit your entry. Which is the next loop contest deadline.

Now you have a chance to enter the loop contest again with a totally new poem.
